John and I found Bella Maise Estate the way good stories begin — by accident and by stubbornness. We bought a tired property with a quiet dam, a run‑down shed and a vineyard that hadn’t been touched in a decade. Neither of us came from a winemaking family: John arrived with sixteen years underground as a jumbo operator — a man who knows machines, measurements and how to fix what breaks — and I brought fourteen years of systems thinking from rail and engineering, a master’s in business law, and a knack for turning complex projects into tidy, safe operations.
We learned the land by doing, after long nights and weekends stolen from full‑time work and with a lot of muddy hands. It took forty‑five minutes to prune our very first vine. On that first weekend we even got bogged trying to drive to the house. We were exhausted, wildly out of our depth, and somehow completely certain this was where we wanted to be. Between us we had grit, tools and a plan that was more heart than pedigree.
Bella Maise is a story of hands and head. John’s practical, safety‑first, get‑it‑done approach keeps the machines humming and the shed in order, while my project discipline, community focus and eye for detail turn plans into permits, events and a warm, organised guest experience. Together, while working full time, we rebuilt the place slowly and deliberately — replenishing the soil, learning to manage the dam, and coaxing life back into the vineyard.
We named the place after Belle, our blue Frenchie, and Maisie, our golden retriever, who still patrol the tasting bench and approve every new bottle with a wag and a sniff. Kangaroos hop the paddock at dusk, owls call from the gums and turtles glide in the water — the property felt alive, and we decided to protect that life while making something to share.
Here you can sip sunlit wines by the grass, celebrate everything from small wins to family gatherings at the homestead table, and cherish the hush of dusk when the dam goes copper and the dogs curl up by your feet. That’s the heart of Bella Maise: honest wines, hands‑on care, and hospitality that feels like visiting a friend’s home.
